The Federal Government has introduced new curricula for basic, senior secondary, and technical education, designed to ease content overload and improve the quality of learning across schools.

The revised curricula will take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, explained that the review was carried out in partnership with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and other stakeholders in the sector.

According to a statement by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the new framework seeks to strike a balance between subject offerings and practical, in-depth learning.

Under the arrangement, pupils in Primary 1–3 will take between 9 and 10 subjects, while those in Primary 4–6 will offer 10–12. Junior Secondary School students will take 12–14 subjects, Senior Secondary students will offer 8–9, and technical schools will provide 9–11 subjects.

Prof. Ahmad emphasized that the reform is aimed at streamlining the curriculum to reduce excessive workload, create more time for effective learning, and align education with contemporary realities.

The ministry also praised the contributions of stakeholders and assured that strict monitoring measures would be put in place to ensure seamless implementation and adoption of the new curricula nationwide.
