The Federal Government has commenced applications for the second cohort of its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, a major initiative aimed at strengthening skills development and expanding employment opportunities nationwide.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the development via his official X account on Monday, describing the programme as a critical step in advancing the country’s human capital development agenda.

According to the minister, the first phase of the programme witnessed overwhelming participation, with over 1.3 million Nigerians applying across the country. He noted that the strong turnout highlights the growing interest in practical skills and their role in transforming lives and driving economic growth.

He further revealed that the application portal opened at 4:00 p.m. (WAT), encouraging Nigerians from all walks of life to take advantage of the opportunity to gain valuable skills and improve their livelihoods. He emphasized that the TVET initiative provides a pathway for individuals to build sustainable futures through vocational training.

Details from the programme portal indicate that applications reopened on April 13, 2026, offering fully funded training in a wide range of vocational and technical disciplines. The programme is structured into two tracks: a six-month Short-Term Certificate designed for beginners, and a one-year Vocational Education and Innovation track tailored for individuals with prior knowledge or informal experience.

To qualify, applicants must possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN). Candidates applying for the advanced track are also required to provide proof of prior learning or basic educational qualifications.

Participants will benefit from free tuition funded by the Federal Government, monthly stipends, practical hands-on training, and nationally recognised certifications upon completion. In addition, graduates will receive start-up support and access to business loans to help them establish enterprises in their chosen fields.

The training covers various sectors, including electrical installation, welding and fabrication, digital media, automobile repair, fashion design, agriculture, and renewable energy. Training centres have been strategically located across the six geopolitical zones, including federal and state technical colleges as well as accredited private institutions.

The TVET programme forms part of the broader efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to strengthen Nigeria’s skills ecosystem and reduce unemployment.

Earlier, Punch Online reported that the minister recently engaged international partners in the United Kingdom to advance the next phase of TVET reforms and expand global collaboration in vocational education.
