The Federal Government has unveiled a new ethics and criminal screening verification framework for teachers in both private and public schools across the country.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) announced the initiative in a post on X on Tuesday, explaining that the measure is designed to conduct thorough background checks on prospective teachers before employment.

According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the framework is aimed at restoring professionalism and accountability in the education sector, stressing that teachers must be individuals of sound moral character.

The NOA further disclosed that the system will be integrated into the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal, enabling real-time registration, licensing, and monitoring of teachers. It is expected to curb cases of impersonation, certificate forgery, and the recruitment of unqualified staff in schools.

The TRCN Registrar, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, added that the digital portal will not only strengthen verification but also improve teaching quality through innovative tools such as AI-powered lesson planning and state-level investigation panels.
