The Federal Government has inaugurated the national steering committee for the European Union-funded Education and Youth Empowerment in Nigeria (EISS) project, aimed at strengthening teacher capacity, promoting digital learning, and building a more resilient education system across six states.
Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, described the initiative as a timely support that aligns with ongoing reforms in the country’s education sector. She explained that the project is being implemented in partnership with the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Ahmad said the programme is focused on equipping teachers with the digital and pedagogical skills required for modern classroom demands, adding that collaboration and innovation are central to its long-term sustainability.
According to her, the EISS project is structured around three key pillars: digital training for teachers, curriculum reform, and the establishment of a national community of practice that will encourage knowledge sharing among educators.
The Head of Cooperation for the European Union in Nigeria, Massimo De Luca, stated that the initiative reflects the EU’s commitment to education and human capital development in Africa under its Global Gateway strategy. He noted that the project represents a long-term investment in Nigeria’s future and emphasized the need to restore confidence in the teaching profession.
With technical support from UNESCO, the project is expected to serve as a model for educational resilience and youth empowerment in the region by integrating global expertise with local realities to improve digital literacy and problem-solving skills among learners.
Stakeholders have stressed that effective coordination, transparency, and sustained funding will be essential to achieving the project’s goals. The Federal Ministry of Education has pledged to ensure accountability and measurable outcomes as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s education system.
