Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti (EKSU), has distinguished itself as the first runner-up in the 2025 edition of the annual Sub-Saharan African Students’ Conference and Challenge Bowl, organised by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG).
The competition, which ran from Monday, 23rd June to Wednesday, 25th June 2025, brought together around fifteen universities from across Sub-Saharan Africa, with EKSU among the contenders. A highlight of the event was the Challenge Bowl, an intense contest focused on geoscience knowledge, where many institutions were unable to advance to the finals.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Deputy Registrar and Head of the Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs at EKSU, Bode Olofinmuagun, revealed that the Challenge Bowl comprised three rigorous stages. Despite the tough competition, the EKSU team successfully progressed through the first and second rounds, ultimately securing a spot among the top five institutions.
The University of Lagos, Ekiti State University, and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology from Ghana emerged as the top three institutions, earning them places in the upcoming global finals, with the date yet to be announced. The regional contest awarded cash prizes of one hundred dollars for first place, sixty dollars for second, and forty dollars for third.
Representing EKSU in the competition were Boluwatife Osasona and Lawrence Blessing, both 300-level students from the Department of Geophysics, supported by Olayioye Idowu Iyanuoluwa. The team’s efforts were coordinated by Professor Adeyinka Aturamu and Mr. M. A. Adeniran.
Reacting to the university’s impressive performance, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babatola Ayodele, commended both the staff and students involved, praising their dedication and hard work. He affirmed that EKSU’s reputation for excellence and honour would continue to be upheld to elevate the institution’s profile on the global stage.
