Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has awarded full scholarships worth over ₦800 million to 1,000 students in Kano State, aimed at promoting education and empowering young people.
Each beneficiary will receive more than ₦800,000, spread over four years, to cover their academic expenses. The announcement was made at Bayero University Kano (BUK), where Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South, spoke on behalf of Senator Jibrin.
Jibrin said the initiative was designed to ease the financial burden of education and provide students with access to quality learning.
“The initiative reflects my conviction that a nation can only secure its future when its young people are educated and empowered,” he noted.
Senator Sumaila added that education remains Jibrin’s top priority and described the scholarships as part of efforts to fight illiteracy and secure a brighter future for the country. He also personally supported each beneficiary with ₦20,000 for transport back to their destinations.
The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Atah, commended Jibrin for what he called “an exemplary act of public service,” urging other leaders to emulate the gesture. He also linked the initiative to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting federal efforts in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic growth.
The Vice-Chancellor of BUK, Professor Haruna Musa, described education as the foundation of national development and praised the scholarships as timely support for students and institutions.
Two beneficiaries, Fathiyya Musa and Hauwa Abubakar Ibrahim, expressed gratitude and pledged to make full use of the opportunity.
Beneficiaries were selected from across the three geopolitical zones of Kano State.
