As part of a strategic effort to elevate operational standards and strengthen regulatory frameworks within Nigeria’s marine and cargo survey sub-sector, the Centre for Marine Surveyors in Nigeria (CMSN) has partnered with Niger Delta University (NDU) to provide advanced training opportunities.
Established as a professional body to promote best practices and self-regulation in the marine surveying profession, the CMSN is working to address long-standing gaps in the maritime sector and ensure that surveying services are carried out by competent, licensed professionals who adhere to both national and international standards.
Speaking to journalists, the President of the Centre, Engineer Akin Olaniyan, said the collaboration with NDU has led to the introduction of a Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Surveying. The programme is designed to provide maritime professionals with a solid blend of academic grounding and practical expertise necessary for success in the industry.
“Our primary goal is to promote professionalism and technical excellence in marine surveying through education, training, and collaboration with industry stakeholders,” Olaniyan stated. He added that the Centre’s initiatives go beyond training, with ongoing efforts in advocacy, partnerships, and membership development.
Olaniyan highlighted successful partnerships with institutions such as the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), which has supported training programmes aimed at building indigenous capacity in marine surveying. “We have also established student clubs at institutions like the University of Lagos and the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology,” he said, noting that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to expand awareness and interest in the profession.
As the Centre continues to evolve, Olaniyan said the focus remains on strengthening industry standards, increasing student enrollment, and building partnerships that will give graduates access to practical experience and employment opportunities.
“Our Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Surveying is a comprehensive programme, designed to equip maritime professionals with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills,” he said. “While we face challenges such as limited public awareness and the need to enhance industry partnerships, we are confident that through our ongoing reforms and strategic initiatives, these issues will soon be effectively addressed.”
