Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan branch, staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday, demanding that the Federal Government honour the long-standing agreement signed with the union.

Led by the branch chairperson, Dr. Aderemi Afolabi, members marched across the UI campus, displaying banners decrying the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement. The demonstration served as a warning ahead of a scheduled meeting between ASUU and the Federal Government on August 28.

Dr. Afolabi emphasized the urgency of implementing the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed Report, which he said comprehensively addressed all contentious issues and represented a consensus between both parties. The report was submitted in February 2025.

“Our peaceful protest, which started from the Faculty of Arts and spanned the university campus, is a clear message to the government: we are tired of being taken for granted,” Afolabi said.

He described the Federal Government’s approach as “delay tactics” and warned that ASUU members were growing increasingly frustrated by what he called a “keep them talking” strategy.

Though ASUU acknowledged the planned meeting on August 28, Dr. Afolabi said union members are no longer willing to tolerate endless delays without concrete outcomes.

This development comes a day after the ASUU Ibadan Zone held a press conference warning of possible industrial action should the government fail to act decisively.

Throughout the protest, scores of ASUU members moved through campus chanting solidarity songs, reinforcing their call for immediate action.
