The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) Chapter, has awarded scholarships totaling ₦1.1 million to 11 financially disadvantaged students of the institution for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The scholarship initiative is aimed at supporting underprivileged students, helping them stay focused on their studies, and enhancing academic performance. The beneficiaries were selected through a rigorous process involving screening and interviews, whittled down from over 100 applicants.
Under the scheme, two students each received ₦200,000 from the National ASUU body, while five students were awarded ₦100,000 apiece by the UI Branch of ASUU. Additionally, four students benefited from ₦50,000 each, donated by Professor Tajudeen Akanji, a member of the ASUU-UI branch, in solidarity with the Union’s mission.
Speaking at the award presentation, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, Chairman of ASUU, UI Chapter, reaffirmed the Union’s dedication to the future of talented Nigerian youths. He stressed that despite ASUU’s ongoing challenges—including delayed salaries and the federal government’s reluctance to sign a new agreement—education must remain accessible to deserving students regardless of financial hardship.
“ASUU views investing in indigent students as a way of instilling values of support and empathy, hoping these beneficiaries will someday contribute positively to society,” Dr. Afolabi noted.
During the ceremony, the Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Professor Abiodun Olaniran—represented by Chairman of ASUU LAUTECH, Olujimi Dada—emphasized that the Union’s efforts extend beyond members’ welfare. He urged ASUU members not to relent in advocating for better working conditions and improved learning environments across public universities.
The award presentation took place at the ASUU Secretariat, Olajuwon Olayide Extension, Ajibode, University of Ibadan.
