The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, has called for immediate humanitarian aid and effective resettlement programmes to facilitate the safe return of displaced persons in Benue State, following recent attacks by suspected armed herders.
In a statement released Tuesday by the union’s Chairperson, Ali Sule Ako, and Secretary, Daniel Chile, ASUU condemned the recent assault on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, describing it as a devastating blow to the already fragile rural communities in the state.
Lamenting the persistent loss of lives and destruction of property across Benue, the union decried the rising insecurity and urged security agencies to act swiftly and impartially to prevent further violence.
“The Federal and State Governments must rise to their constitutional duty of protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians, particularly those in rural and vulnerable communities,” the union stated.
ASUU-MOAUM demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those behind the Yelwata attack and called for justice to be served without delay. The union also emphasized the urgent need for relief materials and comprehensive resettlement strategies to restore normalcy for affected victims.
Highlighting the broader implications of rural insecurity, the union warned that continued attacks on farming communities threaten not only the safety of residents but also national food security.
“In these trying times, we stand with the good people of Benue State and reaffirm our commitment to justice, peace, and the preservation of human life and dignity,” the statement concluded.
