The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet its seven-point demands or risk industrial action.
The union’s National Executive Council (NEC) reached the resolution at its meeting on Sunday at the University of Abuja. In a strike notice released on Monday, ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, said the government’s neglect of the university system and refusal to honour agreements had forced the union to issue the ultimatum.
“At the NEC meeting held on September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja, the union decried the neglect of the university system and the government’s consistent refusal to meet its demands,” Piwuna stated.
He added that if the Federal Government fails to act within the two-week window, ASUU will first embark on a two-week warning strike, which could be followed by a total and indefinite strike.
The development has renewed concerns about possible disruptions in Nigeria’s public universities, with stakeholders calling on the government and ASUU to resolve the issues through dialogue.
