ASUU Confirms Progress in Talks with Federal Government as Warning Strike Enters Seventh Day

ASUU calls for action on education hardships in Nigeria

As the two-week warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) enters its seventh day, the union has announced that negotiations are ongoing with the Federal Government’s Renegotiation Team, led by former Head of Service, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed.

ASUU revealed that significant progress has been made on five of its seven key demands, raising optimism for a potential resolution to the industrial action.

In a bulletin to members dated October 19, 2025, and obtained by The Guardian, ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, listed areas of progress to include the release of third-party deductions, payment of promotion arrears, and the mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA). Others are the confiscation of University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) land and the reported victimisation of union members at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Lagos State University (LASU), and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

The update, titled Strike Bulletin No. 2, also noted that several influential Nigerians have stepped in to mediate between the union and the government.

“Engagements are ongoing on all aspects of the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, guided by the principles of Collective Bargaining,” Piwuna stated.

He praised members for their resilience and unity, urging them to remain steadfast as negotiations continue. “The Branch Chairperson remains the only reliable source of information at all times. Members should, therefore, attend branch congress meetings promptly,” he added.

The ongoing warning strike, which began last week, is part of ASUU’s efforts to compel the government to honour previous agreements and address issues concerning university funding, staff welfare, and institutional autonomy.
