The Wellington Scholarship Program is established to encourage postgraduate research. Victoria University of Wellington offers these scholarships to students who are about to begin their doctoral studies.
These Wellington Doctoral Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and are open to both New Zealand and international students across all disciplines. The program supports the university’s mission to promote world-class research and to attract top-tier talent from around the globe.
Eligibility Criteria
To be qualified for the Wellington Doctoral Scholarship Program, applicants must:
- Be graduates of any university within or outside New Zealand who intend to enrol full-time for a Doctorate (PhD), or
- Have already commenced their doctoral study at Victoria University of Wellington
- Have a strong academic record and excellent academic references, or: demonstrated potential for high-quality research, or
- Have a record of publication in high-quality journals commensurate with experience and education

Scholarship Benefits
Successful applicants of the Wellington Doctoral Scholarship Program will receive:
- A $30,500 per annum stipend
- Full domestic tuition fees for up to three years
The scholarships are awarded to top-ranked candidates during each Doctoral admission and scholarship application round.
Selection Criteria
Applications for the Wellington Doctoral Scholarship will be evaluated based on:
- Academic merit
- Research potential
- Recommendations by the relevant School and Faculty
Final selection is made by the Victoria Research Scholarships Committee from among the applicants nominated by their Schools and Faculties.
Offers are made approximately six weeks after the closing dates in March, July, and November. As some candidates may decline offers, additional offers may follow. It may take up to three months after the application deadline for all applicants to receive final notification.
