Scholarship Details
The Forest Forensics and Dendroecology Lab at the University of Wyoming is inviting applications from prospective M.S. students to conduct research on wildfire risk and forest recovery across Wyoming, starting in Fall 2026.
The selected candidate will develop deep-learning models to assess fuel loading and forest regeneration using LiDAR technology. In addition, the student will design and implement a statewide field campaign to validate the developed models through forest sampling.
The successful applicant will join a dynamic and collaborative team of five graduate students in Laramie, Wyoming, working within an engaging and research-driven academic environment.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the University of Wyoming Masters Scholarship 2026, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Forestry, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related discipline
- Proven ability to analyze large datasets using R statistical software
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Additional Desired Qualifications
- Experience processing and/or analyzing LiDAR datasets
- Experience with deep learning or machine learning techniques
- Experience conducting fieldwork in remote environments
- Experience writing and publishing peer-reviewed academic manuscripts

This research assistantship is fully funded through the Wyoming Water Research Program and represents a partnership between the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center and the Wyoming Forest Resilience Initiative.
The programme is expected to begin in August 2026, with an anticipated graduation date of May 2028.
