Scholarship Details

The University of Toronto, in partnership with the Africa Health Collaborative, is delighted to announce the 2026/2027 intake of the Mastercard Foundation Doctor of Public Health Scholarship. This scholarship program seeks to support outstanding students from Africa who wish to pursue a doctoral degree in public health at the University of Toronto.

The award is specifically targeted at recent graduates and alumni of partner universities under the Africa Health Collaborative. Applicants are expected to demonstrate both academic excellence in health-related disciplines and a strong personal commitment to returning home to contribute to the social and economic development of their countries. In addition to financial support, scholars will benefit from mentorship, orientation sessions, and an academic support network designed to ensure their success throughout the program.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the University of Toronto Mastercard Foundation Doctor of Public Health Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen and currently residing in a Sub-Saharan African country.
  • Be a graduate of a partner institution of the Africa Health Collaborative (see list of partner institutions) and not yet enrolled in any doctoral program.
  • Demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership qualities during undergraduate and master’s studies.
  • Meet the academic requirements for admission into the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program at the University of Toronto.
  • Show a clear intention and commitment to return home during the last two years of the program to contribute to social and economic development in Africa.

Scholarship Benefits

Successful applicants of the University of Toronto Mastercard Foundation Doctor of Public Health Scholarship will receive:

  • Full tuition coverage for the entire program.
  • Travel expenses to and from Canada.
  • Housing support and living stipends.
  • Funding for food, books, and other academic-related costs.

Required Documents

Applicants are expected to prepare and submit the following documents:

  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates (Bachelor’s and Master’s).
  • Proof of graduation from an Africa Health Collaborative partner institution.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Evidence of leadership experience and community engagement.
  • Research statement or study proposal.
  • Valid means of identification.

How to Apply

To apply for the University of Toronto Mastercard Foundation Doctor of Public Health Scholarship:

  • Review the admission requirements for the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program.
  • Register and attend one of the three mandatory virtual information sessions (with an optional Q&A). Attendance at one session is compulsory.
  • Complete the Mastercard Foundation Doctoral Scholarship application. Successful applicants will be notified by November 1, 2025.
  • If shortlisted, submit a formal application to the DrPH program at the University of Toronto, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, before November 22, 2025.
