Scholarship Details

The University of Missouri Graduate Assistantship 2026 is a doctoral research opportunity in the School of Natural Resources, under the supervision of Dr. Benjamin Knapp (Associate Professor of Silviculture). The successful applicant will lead a research project on oak woodland restoration in north-central Pennsylvania.

This large-scale project involves a field experiment testing the effectiveness of various restoration treatments such as prescribed burning, herbicide, mastication, timber harvest, and deer fencing. The research will investigate how these treatments influence understory plant communities, tree populations, and fire behavior/fire effects associated with prescribed burning.

Additionally, the project will assess stand structure and composition across different treatment histories to refine management targets and establish realistic desired conditions for oak woodlands in the region. Conducted in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the position provides an opportunity to work closely with commission foresters and contribute findings to both peer-reviewed journals and management guides.
