Scholarship Details

The Centre for Anthropology and Mental Health Research in Action (CAMHRA) is pleased to announce its 2026/2027 Masters Scholarships (MA and MRes).

Established within the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at SOAS University of London, CAMHRA serves as a globally engaged and locally connected centre dedicated to innovative anthropological research, teaching, and public engagement focused on mental health.

The scholarship supports students pursuing advanced study in mental health from an anthropological perspective. It is also open to applicants for the MRes in Social Anthropology who propose research topics centered on the anthropology of mental health.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the CAMHRA Masters Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be UK or Overseas applicants
  • Hold a minimum of a 2:1 bachelor’s degree in a social science or humanities discipline, or in health sciences such as medicine, psychology, nursing, or social work (for MA Medical Anthropology and Mental Health)
  • Hold at least a 2:1 bachelor’s or master’s degree (for MRes Social Anthropology). Applicants without a background in anthropology must possess a prior master’s degree in another discipline
  • Present a strong research proposal using ethnographic methods to explore a mental health-related issue
  • Have submitted an application to either the MA or MRes programme at SOAS (an admission offer is not required before the scholarship deadline)

Scholarship Benefits

Successful applicants will receive:

  • A full tuition fee-only scholarship
  • Awards available annually until the 2028/29 academic session
  • Each year, up to:
    • Three overseas tuition fee awards
    • Four home tuition fee awards

The scholarship is designed to support exceptional students committed to postgraduate study and research in the anthropology of mental health.
