Scholarship Details
The Montana State University Graduate Assistantship 2026 is offered through the Wildlife Habitat Ecology Laboratory and seeks a motivated and collaborative M.S. student to contribute to a multidisciplinary research project. The focus of this assistantship is to examine the relationship between wildfire and livestock grazing and how these factors shape the ecological and agricultural resilience of rangelands across the Intermountain West.
With shifting fire regimes, evolving land-use practices, and changing weather conditions, western rangelands are undergoing rapid transformations. Fire and grazing—two historically interconnected ecological processes—play a vital role in influencing soil health, forage productivity, plant communities, and wildlife habitat.
This project will evaluate the combined effects of fire severity and frequency alongside grazing practices on soil quality, vegetation diversity and productivity, wildlife activity, and overall biodiversity. The outcomes of the research will provide insights into sustainable land management strategies that balance agricultural productivity with ecological conservation in a changing environment.
