The Max Planck Institutes for Informatics (Saarbrücken), Software Systems (Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern), and Security and Privacy (Bochum) are offering exceptional students the opportunity to intern in cutting-edge research environments. These internships provide a unique platform to explore various areas of computer science, guided directly by faculty mentors.
The internship is ideal for students looking to explore or deepen their interests in research, as well as for those planning to pursue a research-oriented career. Internships run throughout the year, although most students prefer the summer. Each intern is assigned to a specific project based on their academic strengths, interests, and experience.
Internship durations typically range from 12 to 14 weeks, with flexibility for longer terms. Participants will conduct research under the supervision of leading scientists in an English-speaking, diverse, and globally respected research community.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Max Planck Internship Program 2026, applicants must:
- Be exceptional Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral students from any country
- Possess a strong foundational background in computer science (generally equivalent to at least three years of undergraduate coursework in CS)
- Demonstrate a clear interest in academic research in computer science
- Industry professionals with similar qualifications and an interest in transitioning into academic research are also welcome to apply
- Students looking to convert their internship into a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis (with approval from their university) may also apply
- Pre-doctoral candidates aiming to gain research experience before pursuing PhDs are encouraged to participate
- Applicants from diverse academic backgrounds (e.g. economics, law, social sciences) and underrepresented groups in STEM are highly encouraged to apply
- All applicants must have a strong academic track record, regardless of program level or duration
