Applications can be submitted in either Japanese or English, making the process accessible to a wide range of international students. The foundation emphasizes academic excellence, global goodwill, and international friendship, and recipients are expected to actively participate in foundation events and alumni activities during and after their studies.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Honjo International Scholarship 2026, applicants must:

  • Be international students enrolled in, or applying to, graduate schools in Japan from April 2025
  • Be enrolled in a program lasting more than 12 months
  • Begin a Master’s program by age 30, or a PhD program by age 35
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to serving their home country as part of future career plans
  • Show an understanding of international goodwill and willingness to join foundation-organized events and alumni activities
  • Have sufficient Japanese proficiency to carry out daily conversations, as interviews will be conducted in Japanese

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the Honjo International Scholarship 2026 will receive:

  • Monthly stipend depending on program duration:
    • ¥230,000 per month (for 1–2 year programs)
    • ¥210,000 per month (for 3-year programs)
    • ¥180,000 per month (for 4–5 year programs)
  • A travel grant to support participation in international conferences (as per foundation rules)
  • Funding duration aligned with the shortest period necessary to complete the degree (cannot be altered once started)
