Program Details

The U.S. Fulbright Student Program is designed to broaden participants’ academic and professional horizons while fostering cultural understanding. Fulbrighters live, study, and work with people in their host communities, participating in daily life and contributing to mutual respect and shared knowledge.

Through direct interaction—in classrooms, local communities, and everyday settings—grantees gain insight into different perspectives and cultural practices. The program promotes openness, academic freedom, and intellectual integrity, encouraging individuals to engage with others in ways that deepen global understanding and collaboration.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, applicants must:

  • Reside in their country of nomination at the time of application
  • Hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record by the program start date
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English through a recent standardized test score of:
    • 550 (Paper-Based TOEFL)
    • 79–80 (Internet-Based TOEFL)
    • 6.5 (Overall IELTS score)
  • Submit test scores to IIE using institutional code 2326
  • Not hold U.S. citizenship; individuals with dual U.S. citizenship are ineligible
  • Meet additional requirements that may vary by country of citizenship

Program Benefits

Successful applicants will receive:

  • A monthly stipend based on the host country’s cost of living, covering room, board, and incidental expenses
  • Round-trip airfare to and from the host country
  • Pre-departure and/or in-country orientations
  • Comprehensive accident and sickness health benefits
  • 24/7 support for emergency and non-emergency situations
  • 12 months of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) hiring status for U.S. federal government positions
