The Dele Balogun Prize for Flash Fiction is a high–impact African literary initiative designed to spotlight powerful storytelling in under 200 words. In a digital world where attention spans are shrinking, this prize champions short, intense narratives that deliver meaning with precision.
Created for emerging and established writers of African descent, it provides a platform for bold voices ready to challenge norms, explore taboo themes, and shape conversations across the continent and beyond.
About the Program
The Dele Balogun Prize for Flash Fiction was founded by Nigerian writer and creative director Toheeb Dele-Balogun under The Burnt Stories Project. The program celebrates flash fiction as a potent literary form capable of emotional depth within tight word limits. It supports writers of African descent globally and aims to nurture stories that reflect authentic lived experiences. The initiative goes beyond competition by encouraging writers to craft narratives that provoke thought and resonate with today’s fast-paced, highly digital audience.
Theme
The theme for the 2025 edition is “The Stories We’re Not Supposed to Tell.” This theme calls for fearless storytelling that confronts silence, exposes societal pressures, and highlights personal truths. Writers are encouraged to explore cultural barriers, emotional struggles, and untold realities. The theme also reflects the program’s mission to uplift African perspectives within the growing pool of global flash fiction competitions.
Program Benefits
Winners will receive a cash prize of N500,000, providing financial support for future creative projects or personal development tools. Selected stories will be published in a curated anthology by The Burnt Stories Project, giving authors meaningful exposure to thousands of readers and industry professionals. Beneficiaries will also gain access to mentorship opportunities from experienced writers and creatives who can help refine their craft and expand their literary presence.
Eligibility Criteria
The competition is open to all writers of African descent, regardless of nationality, country of residence, or previous publication history. Both emerging and established authors are encouraged to apply. Submissions must be original, adhere to flash fiction length, and align with the 2025 theme. The selection process emphasizes creativity, authenticity, and narrative power over formal qualifications.
