The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme supports talented and motivated graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa to pursue Master’s and PhD studies within the region. This fully funded scholarship aims to strengthen internationally oriented higher education systems in Africa, capable of driving sustainable development across the continent.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the scholarship covers tuition fees, stipends up to €8,920 per year, health insurance, travel, study, and research allowances for selected candidates.

Scholarship Details

The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarships are designed to contribute to the capacity building of universities and research institutions in Africa. The programme supports the education of highly qualified professionals and academics who can take up leadership roles in their respective sectors and drive sustainable progress.

Scholarship recipients can undertake postgraduate studies at universities in their home country (“In-Country Scholarships”) or at partner universities in other Sub-Saharan African countries (“In-Region Scholarships”). Many of these institutions are part of well-established academic and research networks that promote international collaboration and academic excellence.

This initiative presents a unique opportunity for African students to further their education, gain international exposure, and contribute to the overall development of Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarships, applicants must:

  • Be graduate students from Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree when applying for a Master’s programme, or a Master’s degree when applying for a PhD.
  • Intend to pursue their studies in their home country (In-Country) or in another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region).
  • Be female applicants or individuals from less privileged regions or groups (highly encouraged to apply).
  • Note that In-Country scholarships for South African students are managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF) via www.nrf.ac.za.

Scholarship Benefits

Successful candidates will receive full funding for the standard duration of their academic programme, up to two years for Master’s and three years for PhD studies. The scholarship package includes:

  • Monthly allowance: Up to €600
  • Study and research allowance: Up to €920
  • Printing allowance: €800
  • Tuition fees covered in full
  • Travel allowance (for In-Region scholars only)
  • Health insurance coverage
