The Chinese Government MOFCOM Scholarship, established by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, aims to enhance mutual cooperation and foster development among China and other developing nations. The program supports postgraduate students by providing a high-quality educational experience while promoting cultural and academic exchange.
Under the Chinese Government Scholarship—Chinese University Program, the Ministry of Education authorizes selected Chinese universities to enroll outstanding international students into full-time Master’s and PhD programs. Since 2008, universities like the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) have been authorized to admit international students under this scheme.
The MOFCOM Scholarship provides comprehensive support for students during their study in China, with a structure that encourages academic excellence and successful completion within the designated study period.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the MOFCOM Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a citizen of a developing country (excluding the People’s Republic of China)
- Be under the age of 45 (born after September 1, 1974)
- Be in good physical and mental health
- Have at least three years of work experience
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree when applying for a Master’s program
- Hold a Master’s degree when applying for a Doctoral program
- Demonstrate proficiency in English or Chinese, sufficient to meet the academic requirements of their chosen program
Scholarship Benefits
Successful applicants of the MOFCOM Scholarship will receive:
- Full tuition exemption including teaching material fees, research fees, dissertation guidance, and more
- Free on-campus accommodation
- Annual Stipends:
- ¥36,000 per Master’s student
- ¥42,000 per PhD student
- One-time resettlement fee of ¥3,000
- Comprehensive medical insurance for international students
- One-time round-trip international airfare for:
- Initial entry to China
- Graduation return flight
- Annual home visits (up to “n-1” times based on the number of academic years)
- Annual performance review to maintain scholarship status
Please note that students who delay graduation will not receive further sponsorship, and all other scholarship expenses are centrally managed by the Ministry of Commerce or designated universities.
