The Chatham House Mo Ibrahim Fellowship is a joint initiative between the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and Chatham House, offering selected fellows the opportunity to spend ten months in the United Kingdom developing research, leadership, and policy expertise.

Successful fellows will receive full sponsorship, a £30,780 stipend to cover living costs in London, accommodation support, and travel expenses.

Fellowship Details

The Chatham House Mo Ibrahim Fellowship is designed to support talented African professionals by providing them with the opportunity to conduct research and engage with global policy experts at Chatham House in the United Kingdom.

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation, established in 2006, is an African foundation focused on promoting good governance and strong leadership across Africa. The foundation believes that effective governance and leadership are central to improving the quality of life for citizens across the continent.

During the fellowship, participants will contribute to the core research and policy work of Chatham House, while also participating in a leadership development programme. Fellows will gain valuable experience in international affairs, strengthen their research capabilities, and expand their professional networks within global policy communities.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Chatham House Mo Ibrahim Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of any African country
  • Applicants with dual nationality that includes an African country are also eligible
  • Hold a completed BA degree or equivalent qualification
  • Have experience conducting research
  • Be at the early-to-mid stage of their career
  • Work in fields such as academia, NGOs, business, government departments, civil society, or media
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and interest in international affairs and their chosen research area
  • Show interest in the mission and research work of Chatham House
  • Be able to commit full-time to the fellowship, as it cannot be combined with other employment or academic programs

Fellowship Benefits

Successful applicants of the Chatham House Mo Ibrahim Fellowship will receive:

  • Monthly stipend of £2,565 to cover London living expenses including accommodation, utilities, food, and transportation
  • Relocation support, including flights and other travel costs to and from the UK
  • Three nights of accommodation upon arrival
  • Visa-related expenses
  • Payment of the UK Immigration Healthcare Surcharge, giving access to the UK National Health Service (NHS)
  • Research and professional development funding for fieldwork, conferences, publications, and events

After successfully completing the fellowship, alumni will benefit from:

  • Access to the Chatham House Academy faculty and alumni network
  • Five-year membership at Chatham House

Duration

  • The fellowship lasts ten months, running from October 2026 to July 2027 at Chatham House in London, United Kingdom.
