The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral (CGRS-D) is an initiative of the Government of Canada aimed at recognizing and supporting the next generation of top-tier researchers, creative thinkers, and innovators across multiple disciplines.
The program fosters research excellence in diverse fields including health, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities, and encourages interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.
Through this scholarship, selected doctoral students receive advanced research training in Canadian institutions, equipping them with the skills and experience needed to make impactful contributions within and beyond academia.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship 2026, applicants must:
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or an international student enrolled in a PhD program at a recognized Canadian university
- Have completed no more than 36 months of full-time doctoral study (including summer semesters) by December 31 of the application year
- Be enrolled in a doctoral or joint program (such as MD/PhD, MA/PhD, or MBA/PhD), provided the program includes a significant research component like a thesis or dissertation

Successful candidates will receive:
- $40,000 per year
- Up to 3 years of funding (36 months in total) to support their doctoral research work in Canada
