Scholarship Details

The Borel Global Fellowship Program was created to help reduce food and nutrition insecurity and to improve the livelihoods of small-scale farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa.

This will be achieved by training agricultural scientists and future leaders at Iowa State University, with the expectation that these individuals will return to work and contribute to agricultural development in Sub-Saharan African communities. Funded through a generous donation by ISU alumni Jim and Marcia Borel, the fellowship supports students who will conduct the majority of their research in Sub-Saharan Africa and are committed to returning home to apply their knowledge.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be admitted into a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University
  • Be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country
  • Show commitment to using their studies to improve food security in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Conduct the majority of their research within Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Demonstrate intent to live and work in Sub-Saharan Africa after completing their degree

Scholarship Benefits

Successful applicants of this scholarship will receive:

  • Up to $25,000 per year for graduate student stipends
  • Funding may also be allocated as a combination of stipend + research support
  • Duration:
    • Masters: Up to 30 months
    • PhD: Up to 42 months
  • Additional funding available for research travel between the USA and Africa
