Applications are now open for the 2026/27 AUB Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, offered in partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and the American University of Beirut. The programme provides full scholarships for PhD admission and is aimed at developing ethical, engaged, and socially responsible leaders.

Beyond financial support, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program offers a holistic educational experience. Scholars participate in leadership development workshops, community engagement activities, fieldwork, mentoring, tutoring, internships, and career development programmes alongside their academic studies. The initiative goes beyond funding education, focusing on equipping scholars with the skills, values, and networks needed to drive positive change across Africa.

The scholarship covers all essential academic and living costs, ensuring that talented students with limited financial resources can pursue advanced education without barriers.

Eligibility Criteria

To be qualified for the American University of Beirut Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be citizens of, or refugees residing in, an African country
  • Demonstrate strong academic performance in their previous degree
  • Show talent and potential that exceed their financial resources
  • Demonstrate commitment to giving back to their community, country, and region
  • Possess strong leadership qualities
  • Commit to participating in all required Scholars Program activities, workshops, and learning experiences
  • Be 35 years old or younger
  • Demonstrate readiness for university studies in English (RUSE) by submitting one of the following test scores:
    • TOEFL iBT
    • IELTS (Academic)
    • GRE (Verbal)
    • GMAT (Verbal)
    • Duolingo English Test (DET)

  • Step 3: Complete the AUB Financial Aid Application, which becomes accessible within 1–3 working days after submitting the graduate admission application

Applicants will receive an automated email from the Financial Aid Office within 1–3 days confirming access to the financial aid application once it has been activated.

For an application to be considered complete, applicants must:

  • Submit the AUB online graduate application
  • Complete the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program survey
