Scholarship Details
The American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is designed to provide educational access for high-achieving international students who demonstrate leadership, volunteerism, and a strong commitment to serving their home communities.
The scholarship supports one international student with a fully funded undergraduate degree at American University in Washington, D.C., one of the most international cities in the world. The AU EGL Scholarship is renewable for four years of undergraduate study, subject to satisfactory academic progress.
American University values diversity and welcomes students from all backgrounds, including those from underrepresented global and socioeconomic communities. All academic majors offered at AU are eligible under this scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship 2026, applicants must:
- Be an international student from a diverse or underrepresented background who has overcome challenges or barriers
- Be currently enrolled in high school and expected to graduate by June 2025
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.8 out of 4.0 (or be in the top 10% of their class) for grades 9–12
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to leadership, volunteerism, and community service
- Meet one of the following English proficiency requirements:
- 95+ TOEFL iBT (with minimum sub-scores of 20)
- Sub-scores of 24+ on TOEFL paper-based test (taken after May 31, 2023)
- 7.0+ IELTS (minimum sub-scores of 6.0)
- SAT Reading sub-score of 33 or higher
- ACT English score of 29 or higher
- PTE score of 65 or above
- Duolingo English Test score of 125+ (sub-scores 115+)
- Cambridge English score of 185+ (sub-scores 169+)
- IB students should plan to graduate with a full IB Diploma, including at least three Higher Level (HL) subjects
- A-Level students must complete at least three A Levels and a total of 13 years of study by August 2025
Scholarship Benefits
Successful applicants of this scholarship will receive:
- The AU EGL Scholarship covers all billable expenses at American University, including full tuition, room, and board for one international student who requires a non-immigrant visa (preferably F-1 or J-1)
- In addition, up to eight partial scholarships will be awarded, each valued at up to $40,000 per year
How to Apply
To apply for the 2026 American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship:
- Submit the Common Application or Coalition Application along with all supporting documents by January 15, 2026
- After submitting your admissions application, complete the AU EGL Scholarship application and essays through the applicant portal
- Ensure that both the admissions application and the scholarship application are submitted by the special program deadline of January 15, 2026
