Amnesty International Demands Reinstatement of UI Students Suspended Over Fee Hike Protest

University of Ibadan

Amnesty International has criticised the University of Ibadan authorities in Oyo State for suspending three students who protested against a rise in tuition fees, demanding their immediate reinstatement.

In a statement released on Monday, the human rights organisation expressed strong disapproval of the suspension and what it described as the ongoing persecution of Ayodele Aduwo, Nice Linus, and Mide Gbadegesin by the university’s management for speaking out against significant fee increases imposed in 2024.

Amnesty International said the university must halt all unjust disciplinary proceedings against the students, noting that they have endured nearly a year of unfair hearings.

The organisation insisted that no one should be penalised for opposing fee hikes, especially amid Nigeria’s severe economic challenges, and called for the immediate reversal of the students’ suspension, which currently stands at four semesters.
