The Abeokuta Grammar School Old Boys Association (AGSOBA) has unveiled plans to establish a N30 billion Wole Soyinka Institute, aimed at promoting research, creative arts, writing, and vocational development across Nigeria.
AGSOBA President-General, Chief Sunday Oduntan, announced the initiative on Monday during a press briefing to commemorate the 117th Founder’s Day of Abeokuta Grammar School. He revealed that the institute was conceived in honour of Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday and would be located on a four-hectare section of the school’s 73.9-hectare campus.
Chief Oduntan stated that the goal is to complete the project within Soyinka’s lifetime. He also disclosed that AGSOBA has initiated plans to establish a full-fledged university on the school’s premises.
According to him, the Wole Soyinka Institute will serve as a multidisciplinary centre, providing opportunities for learning in areas such as technology, marine and blue economy, creative writing, theatre arts, and research. It will also offer vocational and formal education, creating a hub for knowledge seekers from within and outside Nigeria.
“This project will nurture the passions of Prof. Wole Soyinka—writing, theatre, reading, and research—while equipping young Nigerians with life-changing skills beyond the traditional classroom,” Oduntan said. “Even university students and lecturers will be able to conduct research there.”
He added that discussions were ongoing with international organisations interested in supporting the initiative, stressing that while AGSOBA is spearheading the project, it will not be limited to the alumni body alone.
Oduntan described the proposed institute as an ambitious and transformational project, likening its impact to that of the Presidential Library, though with a stronger academic and research focus.
Highlighting achievements under his leadership, Oduntan said AGSOBA has successfully executed 53 projects in the school, including the construction of a modern food court, perimeter fencing, renovation and construction of classrooms, and the restoration of the historic Rev. Ransome-Kuti building. He also noted that four indigent students have been enrolled in Nigerian universities on fully-funded AGSOBA scholarships.
He commended the Ogun State Government for supporting the school and alumni body, particularly its current construction of 32 new classrooms.
The 117th Founder’s Day celebration featured a keynote lecture titled “Raising Disciplined Minds: Youth Leadership and Integrity Challenges in Nigeria”, delivered by Professor Olufemi Peter, an alumnus of the school.
The event also included award presentations to outstanding students, staff, the school principal, and distinguished members of the alumni association who have contributed to the school’s growth and development.
