Academic Calls for Revival of Mother Tongue Study in Secondary Schools

First Week of School Shenanigans- Starting Strong to End Well

An academic, Mrs. Oby Ezeilo, has called for the preservation of mother tongues in secondary schools by reviving the study of indigenous languages. She made this appeal during a send-off party held on Monday in Abuja for Igbo-speaking students who graduated from her learning centre.

Ezeilo emphasized that preserving language is vital for maintaining cultural identity, safeguarding traditional knowledge, and promoting linguistic diversity. She explained that language protects cultural heritage, including oral traditions and unique worldviews.

According to her, indigenous languages can be preserved and promoted through documentation, teaching, and encouraging students to use their native tongues.

“The purpose of teaching Igbo language is to preserve and promote indigenous languages,” she said. “There is a need to support language revitalisation in secondary schools because it helps maintain cultural diversity and promotes linguistic rights.”

She outlined the goals of promoting indigenous languages as cultural preservation, language revitalisation, and community empowerment—enabling people to take ownership of their languages and cultural identities. Ezeilo also highlighted that this would encourage linguistic diversity and support inclusive education.

Describing the send-off event, Ezeilo said it was a celebration of the students’ successful completion of their language course and a reflection of the positive impact of her teaching.

She added that her efforts go beyond language instruction, aiming to inspire future generations to value and preserve their cultural heritage.
