Scholarship Details
The Bernos F.I.S.H. Lab at the University of Vermont is seeking a motivated graduate student for a funded MSc or PhD research assistantship, with a preferred start date of January or May 2027.
The selected candidate will develop an MSc or PhD thesis focused on one or more aspects of the fisheries of Lake Champlain. Research may draw on human-dimension methods such as surveys, interviews, and web scraping, as well as fisheries techniques including sampling, telemetry, and genetics.
The research questions will be developed collaboratively and are expected to contribute to the understanding of topics such as the movement ecology of fishers and fishes, differences in fishing behaviours and decision-making, and social and knowledge networks within fisheries systems.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the University of Vermont Graduate Scholarship, applicants should:
- Have an academic background in fisheries science, ecology, natural resources, human dimensions of natural resources, environmental studies, geography, sociology, anthropology, data science, network analysis, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrate an interest in interdisciplinary research.
- Have an interest or experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods, modelling and simulations, stakeholder engagement, and social-ecological systems.
- Be interested in pursuing either an MSc or PhD position.
- PhD applicants are typically expected to demonstrate a strong foundation for independent research through a master’s degree, research experience, professional work, or other relevant experience.
- Applicants from all backgrounds, identities, and nationalities are welcome, and international applicants are encouraged to apply.
