Applications are now open for the FRIAS Fellowship Programmes 2027 in Germany for outstanding early-career and senior researchers from around the world.

Hosted by the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg, the fully funded fellowship programmes provide researchers with the opportunity to conduct innovative research in a world-class academic environment. Successful applicants will receive a monthly living allowance or fellowship contract, research support, travel allowance, office space, and access to the University’s research facilities.

Scholarship Details

The FRIAS Fellowship Programmes are designed to bring together exceptional researchers from Germany and around the world to pursue innovative research within an interdisciplinary academic community at the University of Freiburg.

The fellowship provides scholars with the opportunity to work on independent research projects while collaborating with leading academics across different disciplines. Fellows will also have access to the University’s libraries, office facilities, and extensive research resources.

Three fellowship programmes are available for the 2026–2027 academic year:

  • FRIAS Early Career Fellowship Programme (4–10 months)
  • FRIAS Senior Fellowship Programme (3–8 months)
  • FRIAS Sustainable Governance Fellowship Programme for Researchers from Africa (6 months)

Depending on the fellowship category, successful applicants will receive either a fellowship contract with the University of Freiburg or alternative financial compensation.

Eligibility Criteria

FRIAS Early Career Fellowship

Applicants must:

  • Hold a completed doctoral degree with no more than eight years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Have at least four peer-reviewed publications since January 1, 2022.
  • Have completed at least six months of research or study at an academic institution outside the country where they obtained their first academic degree.
  • Propose an innovative research project.
  • Conduct research in a discipline supported by the University of Freiburg.
  • Be of any nationality.

FRIAS Senior Fellowship

Applicants must:

  • Hold a completed doctoral degree with at least eight years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Have at least ten peer-reviewed publications since January 1, 2020.
  • Have completed at least six months of research or study abroad.
  • Submit an outstanding research proposal.
  • Conduct research in a discipline supported by the University of Freiburg.
  • Be of any nationality.

FRIAS Sustainable Governance Fellowship (Africa)

Applicants must:

  • Hold a completed doctoral degree with at least eight years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Have at least five peer-reviewed publications since January 1, 2017.
  • Be based in an African country.
  • Have obtained a Master’s or PhD degree in Africa.
  • Have completed at least six months of research or study abroad.
  • Conduct research in the Humanities or Social Sciences with a focus on sustainable governance.
  • Provide a letter of cooperation from an academic partner at the University of Freiburg.
