Scholarship Details

The Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) was established in 1988 with funding from the Government of Japan to support outstanding students from ADB’s developing member countries. Each year, the programme awards approximately 135 scholarships for postgraduate studies in fields that contribute to sustainable economic and social development.

Scholars can pursue Master’s degrees at 29 participating institutions across Asia and the Pacific in disciplines including economics, business, science and technology, development studies, law, and public policy. Upon completing their studies, recipients are expected to return to their home countries and apply their knowledge and skills toward national development.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of an ADB borrowing member country that is eligible for Japanese ODA scholarships.
  • Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
  • Have gained admission into an approved Master’s programme at a designated institution.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with an excellent academic record.
  • Have at least two years of full-time professional work experience obtained after earning a university degree.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Be 35 years old or younger at the time of application, except in exceptional cases approved by the Government of Japan.
  • Be in good health.
  • Agree to return to their home country and work there for at least two years after completing the scholarship programme.
  • Not be an Executive Director, Alternate Director, staff member, consultant of ADB, or an immediate relative of such individuals.
  • Not be employed by an ADB-JSP designated institution.
  • Not be living or working outside their home country at the time of application.
  • Not already be enrolled in a graduate degree programme.

  • Complete the scholarship application and the ADB-JSP Information Sheet.
  • Submit all required documents directly to your chosen institution.
  • The institution will evaluate your application and nominate shortlisted candidates to ADB.
  • ADB will review nominations and recommend successful candidates for final approval by the Government of Japan.
  • Successful applicants will be notified through their respective institutions.
