Scholarship Details
The School of Social Policy and Society at the University of Birmingham is offering a fully funded doctoral studentship to develop a core outcome set for implementation science research. The successful applicant will join the Centre for Evidence and Implementation Science (CEIS) and will be supervised by Dr Ameeta Retzer, Dr Arabella Scantlebury, and Professor Amy Grove.
The successful candidate will become part of the CEIS Policy and Methods Group, gaining access to world-class research facilities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and extensive postgraduate development opportunities within the University of Birmingham. The PhD project will focus on developing a standardized core outcome set to improve the collection and reporting of implementation data in health-related implementation research.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the University of Birmingham Research Scholarship 2027, applicants must:
- Be of any nationality and from any country.
- Hold a first-class or strong upper second-class (2:1) bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as health sciences, social sciences, or a related field.
- Hold a master’s degree (or equivalent), or be close to completing one, in a relevant subject.
- Relevant professional qualifications and work experience will also be considered.
Desirable Qualifications
Applicants with the following will have an added advantage:
- Research experience using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed research methods, including evidence synthesis.
- Demonstrated interest in health inequalities, applied health research, or health services research.
- Interest in Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) and participatory research approaches.

For Home Students
- Full tuition fee coverage at the Home rate (£5,181 per year).
- Annual maintenance stipend of £21,805 for up to three years.
For International Students
- Full tuition fee coverage at the international rate (currently £22,880 per year).
- Annual maintenance grant of £4,163.
- Applicants should note that any additional living expenses and visa costs must be covered from personal or alternative funding sources.
