Scholarship Details

The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship (Masters) Program supports up to 3,298 students annually across a wide range of academic disciplines. The scholarship is jointly administered by Canada’s three major federal research funding agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

The program forms part of the Canada Research Training Awards Suite (CRTAS), an initiative designed to develop the next generation of researchers and innovators. Through financial support and high-quality research training, the scholarship helps students strengthen their research capabilities, foster innovation and creativity, and make meaningful contributions to Canada’s research environment, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.

Eligibility Criteria

To be qualified for the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship (Masters), applicants must:

  • Be:
    • A Canadian citizen, or
    • A Permanent Resident of Canada, or
    • A Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) as of the application deadline
  • Be enrolled in, have applied for, or intend to apply for full-time admission to an eligible graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with a CGRS M allocation
  • Meet the admission application deadline of the intended institution
  • Have completed, as of December 31 of the application year:
    • Between 0 and 12 months of full-time study (or equivalent) in the program for which funding is requested, including:
      • A master’s program
      • A direct-entry doctoral program from a bachelor’s degree
      • A combined master’s-doctoral program
      • A fast-track master’s-to-doctoral program
      • A master’s program that transitions into an eligible doctoral program without conferral of a master’s degree
      • A master’s program whose requirements will be completed before the award period begins, allowing continuation into an eligible doctoral program
    • Or between 4 and 12 months of full-time study in an eligible master’s program that transitions directly into a doctoral program at the same institution
  • Not have previously held or currently hold:
    • A master’s-level scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC
    • An Indigenous Scholars Award and Supplement
  • Have achieved a first-class average, as determined by the host institution, in each of the last two completed years of study
  • Submit a maximum of one postgraduate or postdoctoral application per academic year to either CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC
