The European Union Traineeship Program offers young graduates a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in EU policymaking and diplomatic work through paid placements in EU offices across Europe and Africa.

Participants will work in an international environment while learning how the European Union operates. In addition to gaining professional experience, selected trainees will receive a monthly living stipend of about €700 to support their expenses during the traineeship period.

Program Details

The European Union Traineeship Program is designed for young graduates who are interested in international relations and want to gain practical insight into the operations of diplomatic missions. Through this traineeship, participants will learn how the EU Delegation represents the interests and values of the European Union within the African Union.

The traineeship will last up to six months and will take place within the Political, Press and Information (PPI) Section of the EU Delegation to the African Union, beginning in November 2025. During the program, trainees will support activities related to communication, political analysis, and information dissemination.

The Green and Digital Economy Section of the EU Delegation manages projects and initiatives across several strategic sectors, including agriculture, climate action, renewable energy, energy efficiency, circular economy, innovation, digitalization, youth employment, MSMEs, and investment. Trainees will gain exposure to these areas while working alongside experienced professionals.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the European Union Traineeship 2026, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must currently reside in Ethiopia due to local health and security considerations
  • Hold a Master’s degree in Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Law, or related social sciences
  • Have less than one year of professional experience after graduation by the time the traineeship agreement is signed
  • Demonstrate fluency in English
  • Possess strong analytical, drafting, and communication skills
  • Have experience in editing and producing audiovisual, social media, and communication materials
  • Be proficient with Canva or other editing and design platforms
  • Show strong interest in African Union politics, economics, and governance
  • Demonstrate a proactive, reliable attitude and willingness to learn and contribute ideas
