The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has launched the 2024 FGN-UBEC/SUBEB Intervention Programme with the distribution of instructional materials to public basic schools across Oyo State.
The flag-off ceremony took place on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the OYOSUBEB car park in Agodi, Ibadan, signaling the commencement of a large-scale supply of core textbooks, learning aids, and institutional materials to public primary and junior secondary schools throughout the state.
Speaking at the event, OYOSUBEB Chairman, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, revealed that the 2024 intervention involves the distribution of thousands of textbooks in core subjects alongside other essential learning materials. He disclosed that the items include 19,289 copies each of Primary Mathematics Books 1, 2, and 3; 15,515 copies of Primary English Books 1–3; and 15,111 copies each of Nursery English Books 1, 2, and 3.
The distribution also covers 6,673 copies each of Nursery Mathematics Books 1, 2, and 3; 2,500 copies each of Science and Technology Books 1–3; 40,000 six-year Continuous Assessment Cards produced by Oyo SUBEB; 6,675 school bags; 6,675 pairs of sandals; 6,675 exercise books; 6,675 pencils; and 6,000 pairs of BESDA sandals.
Adeniran stressed that the materials are meant to serve as institutional resources to strengthen teaching quality and improve learning outcomes. He called on head teachers, principals, and education administrators to ensure accountability and proper utilization of the items.
“These materials are intended for active classroom engagement, not storage. Their true value will reflect in improved academic performance and stronger learning outcomes,” he stated.
In her address, UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, described the exercise as a demonstration of renewed commitment to providing quality, inclusive, and equitable basic education for every Nigerian child.
Represented by UBEC Zonal Director, Mrs. Beatrice Okei, she explained that the intervention aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s education agenda, which emphasizes literacy, numeracy, values, and skills acquisition as critical drivers of national development.
She reiterated that UBEC’s statutory responsibilities include coordinating the implementation of the Universal Basic Education programme nationwide, disbursing intervention funds to states and the Federal Capital Territory, setting and monitoring minimum standards, and promoting access, equity, quality, transparency, and accountability.
To further tackle the issue of out-of-school children, she disclosed that UBEC is distributing 15 million school bags, sandals, and writing materials across the country to reduce the financial strain on vulnerable families and encourage school enrolment and retention.
Describing the programme as a practical example of collaborative governance, she affirmed that both the Federal and State Governments remain committed to strengthening partnerships to deliver inclusive and high-quality basic education.
Also speaking at the event, SUBEB Executive Board member, Dr. Olukemi Adeosun, noted that the distribution marks a significant milestone in repositioning basic education in Oyo State. She added that access to relevant textbooks enhances lesson preparation for learners and eases instructional pressure on teachers.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State, Comrade Raji Oladimeji, commended the state government and SUBEB leadership for sustained improvements in infrastructure, teacher recruitment, and staff welfare.
He encouraged teachers and pupils to make effective and responsible use of the materials to achieve the intended educational impact.
