Sanwo-Olu Appoints Sixth Chancellor of Lagos State University

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has named the Alara of Ilara Kingdom near Epe, Oba Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, as the sixth Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

His appointment comes following the completion of the tenure of Professor Gbolahan Elias, who served as the university’s fifth Chancellor. The Lagos State Government and the LASU community commended Elias for his dedicated service and the distinction with which he represented the institution during his time in office.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who serves as the Visitor to the university, made the appointment in accordance with the provisions of the Lagos State University Law 2004 (Chapter L69, Volume 7, Schedule 1), which empowers the Visitor to appoint the Chancellor.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council of LASU, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu, the appointment of Oba Ogunsanwo is for a five-year term, renewable for one additional term. The appointment officially took effect on Friday, 13 February 2026.

The university’s Pro-Chancellor, Mr. Babatunde Ogala, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, extended their congratulations to Oba Ogunsanwo, expressing optimism about his leadership and its positive impact on advancing the university’s vision and mission.

Oba Ogunsanwo is an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and also holds master’s degrees from University of Lagos and Lagos State University. He previously served as the Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria and holds memberships in professional bodies including the Nigeria Institute of Management and the Institute of Directors, United Kingdom, among others.
