Scholarship Details

Marshall University, through the Herpetology and Applied Conservation Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences, is inviting applications from highly motivated students for a fully funded Master of Science (M.S.) research position. The research project focuses on eastern hellbenders in West Virginia and will be carried out in collaboration with state, federal, and non-governmental organizations.

Under the supervision of Dr. Jayme Waldron and with mentorship from experienced laboratory personnel, selected graduate students will develop and implement an M.S. thesis embedded within an ongoing funded research project. The program emphasizes collaborative research, hands-on fieldwork, and active communication with project stakeholders, providing students with strong academic and practical research experience.

Eligibility Criteria

To be qualified for the Marshall University Masters Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Possess a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (strongly preferred)
  • Meet Marshall University graduate program admission requirements
  • Be able to swim and hold a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license
  • Have prior field research experience with a demonstrated interest in hellbender ecology
  • Show interest in population ecology and demographic modeling (preferred)
  • Be willing to follow strict safety protocols and tolerate challenging field conditions
  • Demonstrate maturity, teamwork skills, and the ability to work independently when required
