The University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships combine the Melbourne Research Scholarship and the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship, offered to high-achieving students enrolling in graduate research degrees at the University of Melbourne. The program supports both domestic and international candidates with strong academic backgrounds and demonstrated research capacity.
Each year, the University awards over 300 scholarships to international students. Since 2016, the former Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS) has been fully integrated into the Melbourne Research Scholarship scheme. Applicants are assessed and ranked based on the academic performance of their most recently completed degree, as well as their research potential within their chosen discipline.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or
- Be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne
- Applications are open to both Australian nationals and international students
Scholarship Benefits
Successful applicants for the University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships will receive:
- Full tuition fee offset:
- Up to 2 years for a Master’s by Research degree
- Up to 4 years for a Doctoral (PhD) degree
- Living allowance of $39,500 per year (pro rata):
- Up to 2 years for a Master’s by Research
- Up to 3.5 years for a Doctoral degree
- Relocation grant:
- $2,000 for students relocating from within Australia (outside Victoria)
- $3,000 for students relocating from outside Australia
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) single membership for international students requiring a student visa
