Scholarship Details

The MINDS Scholarship Programme offers Africans the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies within Africa, outside their country of citizenship or residence. The programme is designed to strengthen intra-African mobility and collaboration by supporting scholars to study in different African countries.

In addition to academic support, the scholarship includes tailored leadership development activities aimed at grooming individuals with a continental outlook. Through this approach, MINDS seeks to develop leaders who can drive cohesion, cooperation, and sustainable development across the African continent.

Applicants must have secured admission into one of the MINDS-preferred institutions to be considered for the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for a Mandela Institute Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a national of an African country and reside in any African country
  • Have been formally accepted by one or more MINDS-preferred institutions outside their country of citizenship and/or residence
  • Have secured admission to pursue postgraduate studies commencing within the following academic year
  • Have achieved a minimum of 70% in each subject/course in the last two completed years of study
  • Demonstrate proven leadership ability or leadership potential, as guided by the application questions
  • Submit a complete online application form along with all required supporting documents

Scholarship Benefits

The MINDS Scholarship may cover some or all of the following expenses, depending on whether a partial or full scholarship is awarded:

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation and meals
  • One return flight ticket for the duration of study
  • A fixed monthly stipend

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following documents on the application portal. All documents must be in PDF format and not exceed 2MB per file:

  • A copy of the passport data/bio page
  • Certified academic transcript or results slip for the last two years of study
  • An official university acceptance letter which must:
    • Be addressed to the applicant
    • State the degree programme offered
    • Indicate the academic year of commencement
    • Specify the duration of the programme
  • A valid study permit or visa, or proof of application (optional)
  • A detailed CV/Resume not exceeding four (4) single-sided pages
  • Two reference letters (maximum of three pages each) addressing:
    • The applicant’s integrity
    • Leadership competence or potential
    • Commitment to the development of the African continent
