The South East Doctoral Training Arc (SEDarc) is a collaborative partnership between six top UK universities funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The consortium delivers advanced postgraduate research training in the social sciences and supports students undertaking impactful doctoral research.

SEDarc’s goal is to equip researchers with specialist training that encourages innovation, supports interdisciplinary work, and prepares scholars to thrive in challenge-led research environments across regional, national, and global landscapes. Through this initiative, international and UK students gain access to high-level academic supervision, structured research development, and a community of scholars committed to producing evidence-based research that drives real-world change.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the SEDarc Scholarship UK, applicants must:

  • be UK or international students
  • be nominated by one of the six SEDarc institutions to apply for the doctoral programme
  • have academic or professional qualifications equivalent to a Master’s degree, or hold a Master’s degree with adequate research skills for the proposed PhD project
  • applicants without a Master’s degree in the social sciences may still be eligible for funding to pursue an approved Master’s programme within the SEDarc consortium
  • contact the administrator of the chosen SEDarc institution, as each university operates a different deadline and internal application procedure
