The Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to creating safer learning environments across the country, assuring Nigerian students of strengthened support for the Safe School Initiative.
This assurance was given by the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arc. Sonny Echono, during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Abuja over the weekend.
His remarks follow criticism from the NANS President, Comrade Olusola Oladoja, who faulted the government for what he described as poor implementation of the Safe School Initiative. According to Oladoja, the recent rise in school attacks and student abductions reflects a nation “under siege.” He cited recent incidents in Kebbi and Niger States, where terrorists invaded schools, abducted students, and in one case, killed a vice principal.
In response, Echono emphasized that government, in collaboration with security agencies, remains committed to protecting students and ensuring secure learning environments nationwide. He stressed that the welfare and safety of learners are central to the education reforms being pursued under the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He noted that improving the quality of teaching and learning, strengthening facilities both online and offline, and motivating lecturers are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the education sector. Echono added that the administration aims to produce graduates who are not only employable but capable of creating jobs.
He highlighted the President’s appreciation for the support received from Nigerian youths and encouraged continued collaboration, assuring that more youth-centered programmes would be implemented. He also pointed out the President’s inclusion of young people in his cabinet as part of efforts to empower the next generation.
Echono further pledged TETFund’s support for NANS activities, including its upcoming 45th anniversary celebration.
Earlier, the student leadership commended TETFund for its vital role in developing infrastructure in tertiary institutions, noting that many campuses would struggle without the agency’s interventions. NANS Secretary-General, Comrade Anzaku Shedrack, expressed confidence in Echono’s leadership and informed him of plans for the association’s anniversary scheduled for December 4–7, 2025, during which the President and the TETFund Executive Secretary will receive honorary awards.
