The Federal Government has unveiled plans to collaborate with the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) in Qatar as part of ongoing efforts to expand and modernise Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across Nigeria.

UDST, a globally recognised hub for applied education and research, plays a key role in Qatar’s sustainable development and contributes significantly to international academic advancement.

Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, announced the partnership during an official visit to the institution, where he was received by UDST President, Dr. Salem Al-Naemi, and members of the university’s senior management team. The minister also toured the university’s prestigious Certificate School, known for its competency-based TVET curriculum and internationally accredited technical programmes.

Dr. Alausa praised the university’s strong focus on hands-on training, industry readiness, and globally aligned certification standards—core elements of Nigeria’s current skills development reforms.

He highlighted several areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s TVET delivery system. These include faculty exchange programmes and advanced train-the-trainer initiatives designed to build the capacity of Nigeria’s technical instructors. Under the partnership, Nigerian educators will receive specialised training in fields such as welding, plumbing, HVAC systems, electrical installation, and solar photovoltaic technology.

According to the minister, these initiatives are expected to significantly upgrade Nigeria’s technical teaching capacity and align the country’s skills development framework with global best practices.

Dr. Alausa further noted that UDST will support Nigeria in establishing a comprehensive quality assurance system to ensure that certificates, diplomas, and degrees issued by technical colleges and skills centres meet international standards.

He added that this move will enhance the global mobility and recognition of Nigerian TVET graduates, especially in Europe and North America.
