The Kwara State government has ordered the immediate closure of schools in five local government areas of the Kwara South senatorial district in response to rising security challenges. According to a statement from the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the government has activated proactive security measures to ensure a safer environment for schoolchildren.
The affected areas include Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin, and Oke Ero local government areas. Dr. Olohungbebe explained that the measures aim to curb the activities of kidnappers who might exploit schoolchildren as human shields amid intensified security operations. Boarding schools in Irepodun are also included, as they are considered potential targets for criminals attempting to evade security crackdowns.
The commissioner noted that the closure will remain in effect until further security clearance is granted, signaling the government’s commitment to safeguarding students while addressing the ongoing threats in the region.
