The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike for one month to allow further negotiations with the Federal Government following the intervention of stakeholders.
ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension on Wednesday in Abuja after an emergency National Executive Council meeting of the union. He said the suspension takes effect from midnight, Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
The union had on Monday, October 13, declared a two-week warning strike to press for the resolution of its demands by the Federal Government.
Issues in contention include the conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN–ASUU Agreement, release of withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries, sustainable funding and revitalisation of public universities, and the cessation of victimisation of lecturers in LASU, KSU (now Prince Abubakar Audu University), and FUTO.
Other demands include payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears, payment of promotion arrears for over four years, and release of withheld third-party deductions such as cooperative contributions and union check-off dues.
The two-week warning strike was declared despite appeals by the Federal Government for the union to shelve the action. The Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, had acknowledged that many of the unresolved issues have lingered for over 15 years.
