Scholarship Details
The Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) is designed to encourage and retain talented students who choose Alberta as their academic destination. The award recognizes graduate students—both domestic and international—who have achieved academic excellence in their programs and have contributed meaningfully through research, innovation, or scholarly activities.
The scholarship is available for course-based and thesis-based master’s and doctoral programs at the University of Alberta. Students enrolled in a graduate certificate program that can transition into a Master’s degree are also eligible. Recipients must be residing in Alberta (either studying online or in-person) during the scholarship period.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Government of Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES), applicants must:
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or an international student with a valid study permit.
- Be enrolled in an eligible course-based or thesis-based master’s or doctoral program.
- Be living in Alberta while taking classes (remotely or in person) at the University of Alberta.
- Have updated their citizenship status and Alberta residential address in their Bear Tracks account by the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) deadline.
- Complete the AGES Student Declaration Form to confirm Alberta residency during the study period.
- Be registered full-time in Fall 2025 and/or Winter 2026 terms (students with accessibility accommodations may apply with at least 40% of a full course load).
- Demonstrate academic excellence through one or more of the following:
- A minimum GPA of 3.3 over the most recent 15 graded units in the current program, or Admission GPA (AGPA) if fewer credits are available.
- Research or academic contributions, such as published papers, conference presentations, exhibitions, or community engagement.
- Previous scholarly recognition, including awards, prizes, or other academic honors.
- Be registered in years 1–4 of a Master’s program or years 1–6 of a Doctoral program during the scholarship tenure. (Students who transferred from a Master’s to a Doctoral program will have their previous months counted toward their Doctoral period.)
- Note that qualifying students are not eligible.
Scholarship Benefits
Recipients of the Government of Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) will receive:
- A one-time payment of $12,000, awarded directly under the Government of Alberta’s directive.
This funding supports tuition, research activities, and other academic expenses, helping students focus on achieving their graduate study goals.
