Scholarship Details
The Maastricht University Scholarship programme combines two funding schemes: the High Potential Scholarship, financed by the UM Scholarship Fund, and the NL Scholarship, supported by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science together with Dutch universities.
This initiative is specifically designed for international students from outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Suriname, offering them the chance to study a full-time Master’s programme at Maastricht University. The programme provides a unique opportunity to gain world-class education in the Netherlands while receiving full financial support.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the 2026 Maastricht University Scholarship, applicants must:
- Hold nationality in a country outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Suriname, and meet the visa/residence requirements for the Netherlands.
- Not hold dual nationality from any EU/EEA country.
- Apply for admission into one of the participating full-time Master’s programmes at Maastricht University for the 2026/27 academic session.
- Meet the admission criteria of the UM Master’s programme chosen.
- Have never previously enrolled in a degree-seeking higher education programme in the Netherlands (exchange students may apply).
- Be under 35 years old on September 1, 2027.
- Demonstrate excellent academic performance with transcripts or letters of academic excellence.
- If equally qualified, preference will be given to applicants ranked among the top 5% of candidates.
Scholarship Duration
- 24 full scholarships available annually
- 13 months for one-year Master’s programmes
- 25 months for two-year Master’s programmes

- Letter of Motivation (using the required UM template)
- Proof of Academic Excellence – transcript with GPA/rank or official letter stating applicant is among the top students
- Personal Statement of Financial Need – describing financial circumstances and reason for requiring support
- Reference Letter – from a professor, lecturer, or employer (not family members) written no earlier than February 2023
- Referee Contact Details – including work telephone number and institutional email address
